7 Tips to Ace Your Virtual Interview

As businesses resume, some companies are looking into hiring again. Virtual interview is more common these days as the side of caution. Besides, as technology continues to advance, many companies have been trying to adapt to the new innovations to save time and increase efficiency. Acing your virtual interview will be your first step to have yourself being invited for a follow-up interview and ensuing you an employment. The common mistakes that many candidates have during a virtual interview is not paying attention to details such as their attire, their background or being prepared. Therefore, these lowered their chances of being screened after an interview.  Here are some ways you can ace in your virtual interview and impress your future employer.

1.     Check your technology

The moment you agreed to attend a virtual interview, make sure your technology is functioning well, particularly, your camera and microphone. Check your internet connectivity as well. Technical savvy is one of the traits that employers will pay attention. If you are fumbling around with your audio or lighting during the call, your hiring manager might have a reason to question if you are the right candidate for the job.

2.     Avoid distractions

Besides testing your technology, you will also have to decide where is the best place to take your interview. Make sure your room has an optimal lighting or blank wall preferably so that you are at your focal point during an interview. If it’s otherwise, please always make sure your surroundings are tidy and neat. Silence your cell phone, turn off the TV or radio and close any windows if there’s any to avoid any noise distractions. It is good to tell people you are staying with that you will be using a particular area for your interview and the time of your interview. If you have a pet at home, place your pet in a designated room during the interview session.

3.     Sit down and be ready

Be prepared even before a virtual interview, do not get yourself clicking around to search the web during an interview. Be ready to answer any questions that are directing to you and stay focused. Write down notes if you need to and do your research. Refrain yourself from memorising answers to questions but instead, write your main points on a post-it note and stick it on your computer. It is easy to know if you sound robotic by memorising. Therefore, it is advisable to practise with someone around you to be well prepared. Avoid long answers if the questions don’t warrant it. Be clear and precise with your answers.

4.     Do follow up

It will always be a good habit to send a thank you email to the interviewer after your session. It shows that you appreciate their time and allowing yourself to resell yourself and show the strengths you can bring to the role.

5.     Your attire

Even though it is a virtual interview, you should dress formally as well, as you would for a face-to-face interview session. Dressing formal doesn’t just give you a professional look but also makes you feel more prepared and confident for the interview. A smart and good formal outfit example for men and women will be a button-down shirt and blazer with slacks.

6.     Your body language

Besides your attire, your body language during an interview is also a promising way to project your professionalism. A virtual interview may limit body language communications. Hence, it is crucial to show your body language clearly and professionally. For example, don’t get startled if you received an unexpected question. Stay calm and take a moment to gather your thoughts. Always make sure that your camera is in a place and make sure your face is in the middle of the screen so that the interview can see you. Show your genuine enthusiasm like a smile or confident eye contact with the interviewer.

7.     Building connection

You will need to give a good impression during a virtual interview. Building connection can be a little challenging through a virtual interview. Therefore, a promising way to ace this aspect will be putting more effort by doing background research on your interviewer or the company to see if there’s any mutual interest that you can build on.

The bottom line

The key to ace in a virtual interview is to show that you are well-prepared. Apart from making sure your technology works well, doing your research before the interview and be ready for any questions directed to you, these ways will help you shine from other applicants.
