How to be confident in an interview
No matter how many times you’ve been through interviews, they still can be tough. There’s one thing we can promise is that if you take the time to get to know what you are getting into (the position, the responsibilities and the company), you will definitely feel more confident. So, be ready to talk about your skills, experience and personality will fit right in with the below guide.
1) Learn about the company
It’s no longer a surprise where many people go to their interviews underprepared. Companies are always on the lookout for experienced professionals and nothing says experienced like an interviewee who has done their homework. Find out as much as you can about the organization. Use these sources:
- Company Website
- Linkedin and other social media networks
- Glassdoor
- Google “News” Search
- Friends and business associates
So, what exactly are you researching?
- The values – Understand what the company want from their employees
- The leadership – Get to know who leads the company and what they care about, especially your interviewer.
- The news – Dig into the insights of the company’s struggles & triumphs.
- The clients – Get information about the company’s product and service offerings. Understand their target market.
- The real culture – There’s always the ‘what we strive to be’ and ‘this is who we are’ – sometimes, they are not always in synced. Seek out more about the company from insiders.
2) Research yourself!
Learning about the organization is only half the battle. Once you’ve mastered that, it is time to make connections between the organization and who you are as a professional.
- Start with the job description –You’d be able to find out what an employer want out of you. Utilize this wisely as your starting point to develop thorough notes.
- Then brush up on your career history –Once you have identified what the company is looking for, review each of your prior positions for real examples of how you have completed these goals before. Give concrete examples or scenarios that demonstrate your achievement on saving time, money or resources.
- Don’t forget the cardinal questions – The truth is, interviewers can be creative with their questions but at the end of the day, they will want to learn about your strengths and weaknesses. Based on the job description, find the suitable points to speak about your strengths. Honesty still remains the best policy when it comes to weaknesses, but tell the interviewer how you manage it.
- Put your best foot forward – We all know how important a resume is, but do take note that it is the soft skills that can make all the difference. All you’ve got to do is to relax, be yourself and always remain positive. As much importance is placed on your technical background, employers are also assessing your attitude and presentation.
- Make sure to clean up your social media! – You may have written an excellent resume, but after it makes its way into the right hands, it’s likely to open the doorway revealing your digital self.
3) Get your questions ready.
